DARIN - "Flashback"
 The story of Darin's path to fame hardly needs to be told again. Everyone knows the story of the young man from Vällingby, a Stockholm suburb, who at the tender age of 17 came second in Idol, but who quickly shot up to became the brightest star produced by the show and Sweden’s biggest teenage idol in the 21st century. This was the cute boy who made girls scream themselves hoarse. Even teenage idols grow up though. Darin may still be young, but he has grown up. By age 21, he had already gained more experience and achieved more than most artists do over a lifetime with his three gold and platinum records, several tours, a Grammy Award and a great many other awards. This maturity has also put its mark on Darin’s fourth album Flashback. The singer behind the microphone is not a little boy anymore. Without having lost his footing and humbleness, Darin brings a new conidence and audacity to the table. The type of conidence that a person performing among professionals has – the type of conidence that a person who is secure in terms of both experience and talent, and who already knows what he is capable of and what he is worth has. This can all be heard – both in Darin's voice and each of the 14 tracks on Flashback. With producers such as Murlyn, Johan Bobäck and Red One (who also works with artists such as Akon and Michael Jackson) in his corner, Darin has also updated his sound to match his new maturity and conidence: Hypermodern, electronic R&B/Pop for the late 2000s, a time in which the boundary between R&B and Pop has increasingly disappeared. "It sounds much more like me today. This record represents me, and I feel like I have found a sound I can develop, a path on which to continue," says Darin. Flashback has taken longer to inish than any of Darin’s previous albums, and he has also taken part in writing the music and lyrics in a completely diferent manner than before. "I have been writing songs since I was 14 years old; I have taken part in writing and co-producing all of the songs except for one on this record. It is important to me that people understand that I write my songs myself, since many don't think this is the case," he says. Darin has also taken the natural step to begin writing for other artists. There are several projects in the works, even if his focus is still on his own career. Darin also has a very clear idea of what he wants his sound to be: "I love hits – it's not important to me for my sound to be diferent for the sake of being diferent, but it is important to me that it feels fresh and new – but hit-like as well. The story of Darin's path to fame was only the irst chapter. The story of Darin has yet to be written. It has only just begun. DARIN ON SOME OF FLASHBACK'S TRACKS: See U At The Club – I wrote this song with Red One after a really tough trip to Berlin where among other things I lost my driving licence. When I arrived and saw my friends, I just felt like, "never mind all my problems, let’s just go out and party, I can’t be bothered to care". I wanted to make a club song to capture that feeling. Seasons Fly – This is the song on which I've done the most on the record. Johan Bobäck was the co-producer. We were just sitting around not really doing anything, when I started beat boxing for fun. He put a loop on it, and then everything just lowed – piano chords, strokes, melody, lyrics – everything just came naturally. Paradise – This is the first song I wrote for the record. It was a year and a half ago, and it is really nice that it is still good. There was something magical about it. The lyrics are about new love, and are both happy and sad – the feeling of "is this really happening?" and the fear inside before you tell her. |
